Frequently Asked Questions about Insurance

Can I Afford Therapy?

Yes, therapy is affordable for everyone. We accept a variety of insurance plans as well as private pay. Some of our therapists offer a sliding scale to accommodate clients that don’t have insurance. This means that you and your therapist can attempt to agree upon a fee that is comfortable for both of you. If our practice is unable to work within your financial means, we will refer you to someone who can.

How Much Does Therapy Cost if I Have Insurance?

Each insurance plan is different and varies in what they pay their providers. As a client, you are responsible for your copays and deductibles. You can contact your insurance company directly to determine what your copay or deductible may be prior to coming in for treatment.

What is a deductible?

A deductible is the amount of money you must pay for medical services before your insurance company begins helping to pay your medical bills. This amount is based on the insurance plan you have chosen privately or were given by your employer.

For Example: If you have an insurance plan with a $500 deductible and receive a $600 medical bill, you must first pay $500 before your insurance company will help pay the rest.

What is a copay?

A copay is the amount of money you must pay for a specific service received before your insurance company will help cover the rest. This amount depends on your individual insurance plan.

For Example: If you have an insurance plan that states a medical visit requires a $25 copay, you are responsible for that amount before your insurance company helps pay the remaining cost.

What does co-insurance mean?

Coinsurance is the percentage of the medical bill you must pay for any given service covered by your insurance company. An out-of-pocket maximum is the total cost you can pay for medical services after you have paid your deductible.

For Example: Let’s say you have a $500 deductible, 20% coinsurance, and a $1,000 out-of-pocket maximum. If you receive a $600 medical bill after you’ve already paid your deductible, your 20% coinsurance would require you to pay $120 because you have not yet met your $1,000 out-of-pocket maximum.

What is an HSA?

It is a Health Savings Account that is associated with many high deductible insurance plans. This can be used as a credit card for most medical expenses. We do not have to be in your insurance network to use your Heath Savings Account.

Do I have to use my insurance?

Even if you have insurance, you can choose to pay for mental health counseling with cash, check, or card. Some choose to do this if they will owe more using insurance compared to “self-pay” or if they do not want their insurance company to have access to their mental health appointments.
